Ops Menu set to deter traders from manipulating food prices

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) will be launching Ops Menu to conduct checks at restaurants and eateries to prevent price manipulation.

KPDNHEP enforcement director Azman Adam said the operation will ensure that food outlets comply with regulations such as price-tagging and using proper weighing scales.

The operation, he said, aims to deter irresponsible traders from manipulating food prices and the weight of the food items.

"The operation will focus on eateries comprising Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indian-Muslim restaurants, food courts and seafood restaurants.

"We will also check the weighing scales used by these restaurants.

"We would like to remind restaurant operators to continue adhering to the law or face action.

"Stern action will be taken against traders who fail to follow the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Price Marking for Goods and Charges for Services) Order 2020," he said in a statement today.

Restaurant operators found to have flouted the law can be fined a maximum of RM50,000 while corporations can be fined up to RM100,000.

Under the Weights and Measures Act (ATS) 1972, traders can be fined up to RM40,000 or a maximum three years' jail.

Azman reminded consumers to be wise when choosing places to dine in.

"To avoid being cheated, consumers must ensure that restaurant operators are using valid weighing scales.

"Patrons are advised to exercise their powers as consumers by comparing prices and the quality of service. Consumer power is the best precaution against getting duped by irresponsible businesses while enforcement action is the last resort against such traders," he said.

Azman urged those with information on unscrupulous trading practices to alert the ministry via WhatsApp at 019-2794317, hotline 1-800-88-6800, or email to e-aduan @kpdnhep.gov.my.
