Kelantan sees increase in rape cases this year

KOTA BARU: Police have recorded 93 rape cases so far this year and majority of the victims are aged below 18.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said in comparison, 86 rape cases were recorded during the same period last year.

"The overall crime index in the state had reduced this year compared to last year but rape cases have increased by 8.1 per cent with 93 cases recorded between January and November this year compared to 86 during the same period last year.

"Kota Baru and Bachok districts recorded the highest number of cases," he said after launching the state headquarters media unit here last night.

Also present were deputy state police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun and all district police chiefs.

Shafien said most of the rape cases involved teenagers and their partners.

"In a majority of the cases, the victims knew the suspects but their families decided to lodge police report as they were still underage.

"But police believe there are still rape cases yet to be reported to the police," he added.

Shafien said 90 per cent of the rape cases have been solved with the arrest of several suspects.

"Police have solved almost all the cases with the arrest of the suspects who are mostly teenagers," he added.
