MRSM Pendang ordered closed after three teachers test positive for Covid-19

ALOR STAR: Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Pendang was ordered to close for three days after three teachers tested positive for Covid-19.

Kedah Health director Dr Othman Warijo said the three teachers were also ordered to undergo home quarantine.

"The positive cases were detected between last Friday and today. Two of the teachers live outside the school while the third teacher lives in the school's quarters," he said when contacted.

Dr Othman added that 30 other teachers were also ordered to undergo home quarantine after they were identified as close contacts.

He said swab tests carried out on the students turned out negative for Covid-19 and they remain at the school hostel for now.

"We have advised MRSM Pendang to close for three days beginning tomorrow (Dec 3) for sanitisation and investigation," he said when contacted.

State Health and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Hayati Othman said the state Health Department had taken all necessary measures to contain the infection at the school.

He said all teachers at MRSM Pendang had completed their Covid-19 vaccination and the three teachers who tested positive did not show serious symptoms.

"The state Health Department is carrying out further investigation on the outbreak," he said when contacted.

It was learnt that the school administration had ordered all teachers at the school to undergo Covid-19 screening after one of them tested positive last Friday.

"All the teachers were subsequently ordered to undergo home quarantine. The swab test results for the teachers came out today and two of them tested positive," a source said.
