MAINJ: No political activities in Johor mosques, suraus

KULAI: Political figures and leaders have been banned from conducting political activities including talks and speeches in mosques and suraus throughout Johor with immediate effect.

Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Tosrin Jarvanthi said the district 'kadi' has been given the responsibility to ensure the rules were enforced.

"That we, the Mosque and Surau Management Division of the Johor Islamic Religious Department have taken a ruling that no political leader is allowed even those from leaders from the ruling government party.

"And also no political party is allowed to use any mosques and suraus, or in any area for religious ceremonies in the entire state of Johor," he said.

He said this after attending the SIRIM @ Anak Bapak Maju Enterprise Joint Scheme Handover Ceremony, at Taman Muhibah Saleng, here today.

Tosrin however said there is no ban for any political figures and leaders from performing prayers, including the recitation of Yasin.

"The Yasin ceremony can be attended by political leaders but there should be no talks or speeches. If you want to read Yasin after Maghrib prayers, there are guidelines," he said.

Tosrin warned that if the rules are not complied with, the matter will be taken to the Fatwa division of MAINJ for further action.

"In the first stage, we will refer to the fatwa section first and decide whether there were any political talks in mosques and suraus, and after that, we will call the district 'kadi' in charge to ensure there is no political activity in their areas," he said.
