Illegal logging still rampant, says Energy and Natural Resources minister

KOTA BARU: Illegal logging activities are still rampant in almost all the states in Malaysia, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said today.

However, he assured that the Forestry Departments of the affected states were closely monitoring the situation.

"It could not be denied that illegal logging activities including at certain forest reserves in the country are still happening.

"Almost all the states, particularly those with 'big' forests, will have illegal logging cases." he said.

The Kota Baru member of parliament, who is also Kelantan Chapter of Malay Football Association president, told this to reporters after visiting former footballer Hashim Mustapha here today.

He also said that each state would have a quota related to harvesting of timber.

"There is an Annual Cut Ration (CTT) for harvesting timber set by the National Land Council and each state has its stipulated quota (logs) for a year which is determined by the Council.

"The states are not allowed to cut or produce logs beyond the stipulated quota," he said, adding that no state governments have violated the rules.
