31pc of children in Malaysia fully vaccinated against Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty-one per cent of children in the country have taken two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Data on CovidNow showed that 10,497 children aged five to 11 have received their second dose yesterday, while 7,137 children have taken their first dose.

A total of 1,665,098 children or 46.9 per cent had at least taken one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, 2,063 new infections were recorded in Malaysia yesterday, taking the toll to 4,487,482.

Of the total, three were imported cases while 2,060 were local transmissions.

The number of recoveries were higher than new infection cases yesterday, with 2,618 having recovered from the coronavirus.

Active cases dipped slightly to 29,229, where 96 per cent of them are undergoing home quarantine, 3.8 per cent are treated at hospitals, 0.2 per cent warded at the intensive care units (ICU) and 0.1 per cent placed at the Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres.

Yesterday, 475 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals. Currently, 12.9 per cent of the Covid-19 beds and 6.5 per cent Covid-19 ICU beds are used.

When combining Covid and non-Covid patients, 65.3 per cent of the normal beds, 58.4 per cent of the ICU beds and 36 per cent of the ventilators are being utilised.

Covid-19 claimed five lives yesterday as the overall death toll climbed to 35,638.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the national infectivity rate, or Rt, stood at 0.85 on Friday.

The Rt in nine and federal territories were above 1.00 while states and federal territories with a Rt below 1.00 were Selangor, Johor, Kelantan, Labuan, Terengganu, Sarawak and Perlis.
