1,706 new cases detected on Saturday, says Health Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The daily confirmed Covid-19 cases nationwide fell below the 2,000-mark after recording 2,166 infections on Friday.

According to the Health Ministry's CovidNow portal, 1,706 new confirmed cases were detected on yesterday.

This took the total tally of infections to 4,487,548 cases since the global pandemic struck in 2020.

Of the total new infections reported on Saturday, three were imported cases.

The data released on the portal also showed the number of recoveries on the same day, was slightly higher than the fresh cases, and stood at 1,746.

This took the total number of active cases to 21,712, of which 95.6 per cent or 21,707 people are undergoing home quarantine.

Of the active cases, 4.2 per cent or 956 people were hospitalised, with 24 being treated at intensive care unit (ICU) at health facilities nationwide.

Fourteen of the total cases warded at the ICU required ventilator support.

Meanwhile, two more Covid-19 related fatalities were reported to the ministry, bringing the death toll due from the coronavirus to 35,711.
