PM: Improvements needed in recognition and certification of TVET programmes

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob wants to see improvements in the accreditation, recognition and certification of technical vocational education and training (TVET) programmes.

This, he said, is to achieve the target fixed under the 12th Malaysia Plan, which is to have at least 55 per cent of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) school leavers pursuing tertiary education in TVET-related programmes by the year 2025.

Ismail Sabri also highlighted the need for exposure at a young age to generate interest as well as awareness among the younger generation on the potential of TVET careers.

"The government has implemented several forms of interventions to provide greater education opportunities for Keluarga Malaysia including 'Program Penajaan Pendidikan' (Education Sponsorship Programme).

"Generally, there are a number of education sponsorship strategies including education loans, scholarships as well as financial assistance," he said in his speech at the launch of the National TVET Week 2022 at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic in Shah Alam near here today.

Ismail Sabri added that the government is committed to developing TVET in the country.

This, he said, was reflected through the high amount of financing borne by the government where 80 per cent of public TVET institutions in the country were offering the programme for free.

He added that a total 171,412 TVET programmes were offered at the diploma and bachelor degree levels from 2019 until 2021.
