Pelosi says Malaysia visit 'productive'

KUALA LUMPUR: United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi described her visit to Malaysia today, as part of her Asia tour, as productive.

She said her Congressional delegation was honoured to be received by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah.

"We engaged in wide-ranging discussion on advancing our shared goals for a free and secure Indo-Pacific," she said in a statement released on her official website.

The prime minister's meeting, she added, followed an interparliamentary exchange presided over by her counterpart, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun.

She said their discussion included security challenges, economic opportunities and governance priorities.

"In each of our meetings, we extended an appreciation for Malaysia's vote at the United Nations on Russia's aggression and their leadership in Asean on repudiating Myanmar or its deadly crackdown on dissent.

"Our governance conversations centred on integrity in government, addressing the climate crisis and fighting Covid-19.

"We agreed to continue collaborating on our shared security interests, economic priorities, trade, human trafficking and climate issues," said Pelosi.

She flew in for an official visit from Singapore via a special aircraft and landed at the Subang Royal Malaysian Air Force base at 10.33am.

She was welcomed by US ambassador to Malaysia Brian McFeeters and Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon.
