PM: No choice but to hold polls if govt falls

SERDANG: The government is prepared to go to the polls soon in the event the current federal administration collapses, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

The Umno vice-president said he would be left with no choice but to call for the 15th General Election if the action by certain quarters led to the fall of the current administration.

"As a country that upholds the principle of democracy, anyone is free to make their own decision (take action) that they feel is best for their political parties.

"They must remember the consequences of their actions, which, in this case, may lead to the collapse of the government if they are bent on withdrawing their support. "And if everyone is ready (wishing for the general election to be held early), we have no choice but to call for the polls.

"If this is the case, the government is ready to go to the polls."

The Bera member of parliament said this when he was asked to comment on reports suggesting that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition may withdraw its support for his leadership.

Ismail Sabri, however, said he would not rush into making a decision.

"Although I have been informed about such reports, I was also told that the statement was made based on a personal capacity and that it is not the official stance of the party (coalition)."
