3,429 new Covid-19 cases, 9 deaths reported on August 17

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia logged 3,429 new Covid-19 cases yesterday (Aug 16), an increase after days of waning down, including Monday's (Aug 15) 2,437 cases.

This brings the country's cumulative infections to 4,741,413 cases, according to the Health Ministry's CovidNow data.

Six of these new infections were imported cases.

Selangor tops the list once again with 1,082 cases, followed by other states reporting three-digit daily cases including Kuala Lumpur at 676 cases, Sabah at 273 cases, Negri Sembilan at 221 cases, Perak at 212 cases, and Sarawak at 159 cases.

Other states with three-digit cases were Melaka with 151 cases, Johor (129 cases), Kedah (123 cases), and Kelantan (113 cases).

Authorities had also recorded 4,882 recoveries which pushed the recovery tally to 4,664,570.

CovidNow also showed that there was a slight decrease in terms of active cases with 40,741 reported yesterday.

Of these active cases, 39,062 people were placed under home quarantine and 32 others were being treated at low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The portal reported 1,563 hospitalised patients with 26 placed in intensive care units and another 58 of them requiring ventilator support.

Nine patients had succumbed to the virus, including one brought-in-dead case.

Selangor and Pahang reported two deaths each followed by one death each at Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, and Terengganu.

The total number of deaths now stood at 36,102 cases.
