Abim urges Muslim community to speak out over death of Mahsa Amini

KUALA LUMPUR: The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) has urged the Muslim community to speak out against a recent incident which lead to the death of a detainee, Mahsa Amini, in Iran.

Its president Faisal Abdul Aziz said the incident was believed to be driven by sentiment, and not based on rational clarity of mind based on the axis of balance and justice in Shariah.

"As widely reported including in social media circles, the arrest was made by the Iranian morality police because the victim was said not to be wearing the hijab properly.

"Abim stresses that in bringing the community to practice Islam as a way of life, it is important to emphasise the aspect of education as a step that should be given priority.

"This includes explanations, clarifications, and constructive two-way dialogue," he said in a statement.

Faisal said the enforcement of laws that require the practice of Islam, such as the wearing of the hijab, which leads to criminal arrests is inappropriate.

"These arrests do not adhere to the principle of proportionality in ensuring that no element of injustice occurs throughout the legal process.

"Being aware of our role in practising Islam based on the values of cosmopolitanism and universality, everyone in the Muslim world should consistently convey the message of Islam to our communities based on the principle of balance, without being driven by any extremist elements from any sources," he said.
