Perak Sultan yet to decide on dissolution of state assembly [NSTTV]

IPOH: Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah has yet to decide on the dissolution of the state assembly.

At a press conference at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building here today, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said any decision by the sultan would be announced later.

"Today, I sought an audience with Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah at Istana Kinta at 2.30pm.

"I presented him with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri's announcement on Parliament's dissolution on Oct 10 after receiving the consent of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

"I also conveyed to His Majesty that the prime minister urged state leaders to do the same and dissolve state assemblies to make way for the 15th General Election (GE15) simultaneously."

Saarani's audience with Sultan Nazrin lasted about two hours.

Saarani said during his audience with the ruler, he submitted a letter requesting the dissolution of the state assembly for Sultan Nazrin's consideration, in accordance with Clause (2), Article 36 of the First Section of the Perak Constitution.

"During the meeting, Sultan Nazrin acknowledged the request, which he will give due consideration.

"An announcement on the dissolution of the state assembly will be made after Sultan Nazrin makes his decision."

Saarani said the matter was not extraordinary as the power to dissolve the state assembly lies with the state ruler.

"Once the sultan makes his decision, I will seek an audience with him again," he said without confirming any date for the next meeting.

He said the state government would function as usual until a decision was made.

On Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the Parliament's dissolution, effectively immediately, paving the way for GE15.

The country will have to go to the polls within 60 days from the announcement.

Saarani was appointed the state's 14th menteri besar on Dec 9, 2020, days after a series of events led to a political impasse in the state leadership.

A new menteri besar was appointed after Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu resigned from the position after he lost a vote of confidence in the state assembly on Dec 4, 2020.

Only 10 out of 59 assemblymen backed Faizal, with 48 opposing and one abstaining.
