KJ: No special lanes for Covid-19 voters at polling centres

KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no special lanes for those positive with Covid-19 to cast their votes at the polling centres.

Caretaker health minister Khairy Jamaluddin affirmed that the authorities had undergone multiple levels of discussions.

"We cannot have special lanes for those infected with Covid-19. The Health Ministry and Election Commission have landed on the best options taking into consideration the resources, space and manpower constraints.

"And the standard operating procedure is what has been announced by the Health Director-General (Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah)," he said, while responding to jitters from voters about the likelihood of having to cast their ballot with those infected with the virus.

The ministry had earlier outlined measures for Covid-19 patients to vote but there was no mention of segregated streams, lanes or zones within the centres.

Requirements outlined include compulsory masking for voters infected with Covid-19 when casting their ballots at the polling centres.

The ministry also strongly urged other voters to keep their mask on when at the polling centre and in crowded areas.

Covid-19 positive voters are not allowed to take public transport including e-hailing services to go out and vote.

These voters must also head straight home to continue their quarantine after casting their ballot.
