Apad told to expand audit to ensure smooth public transportation ecosystem

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has been urged to expand its auditing in the Klang Valley area to ensure a smooth public transportation ecosystem for the public.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this was because public transportation was not only subjected to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana), which provides the light rail transit (LRT) and mass rapid transit (MRT) services.

"I have asked Apad to expand its audit in the Klang Valley area as public transportation is not only under Prasarana.

"It needs to include various agencies and other commuter companies such as Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) or authorities such as the Kuala Lumpur City Hall if it involves walkways.

"The audit scope needs to be expanded and will involve several agencies to ensure that the public services ecosystem could be improved and for actions to be taken quickly," he told a press conference today after a meeting with Prasarana.

Loke added that a procurement process had been carried out for a contract to change the elevators at 16 monorail stations.

"A total of 16 stations have been identified to have non-functioning elevators, which are causing inconveniences to persons with disabilities (PWD).

"Following this, we have instructed police officers and the staff to help these passengers to get to the platform.

"We acknowledge that this is not a comfortable and smooth action, and we will try our best to speed up the recovering work," he said.

Meanwhile, he said 46 out of 706 escalators (6.5 per cent) have been identified as non-functioning as of December at LRT, MRT and KTMB services in the area.

"A total of 192 hand rails and 22 chains have been ordered to ensure that the escalators are working well.

"In terms of lighting, 664 bulbs were not functioning and 17 (infrastructural) leakages reported.

"This is a serious issue and we need to ensure that it is solved (fast). I will (also) personally monitor from time to time," he said.
