Fahmi Fadzil's ministry to work with media houses to ensure press freedom & transparency

PETALING JAYA: Communications and Digital Ministry will work together with media companies like Media Prima Bhd to ensure transparency in news reporting and press freedom.

Its minister Fahmi Fadzil said media companies had been facing a challenging environment to operate in.

"We are ready to cooperate with Media Prima on three main areas. Firstly, we want to ensure that the news and information delivered are accurate and true.

"Secondly, we want to explain to the people the efforts undertaken by the unity government and finally we want to overcome several issues together," he said during a press conference after a corporate visit to Media Prima's Sri Pentas here today.

Fahmi added that the ministry viewed matters relating to press freedom seriously while ensuring that practitioners adhere to the laws pertaining to the media without disrespecting the country's customs and culture.

"The government does not interfere with the operations of private companies but there are aspects that need to be looked into with regards to safety and data security. These are among the issues that the ministry will look into, including on press freedom.

"We are very serious about this and we want to ensure that we have an excellent working relationship with Media Prima and all of its many companies to make sure that press freedom is not only respected but also upheld," added the minister.

Also present was Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching.

Both of them arrived at Sri Pentas in Bandar Utama here at 11am and began their tour of the company with a visit to Media Prima Audio conty.

They also paid a visit to the group's news and editorial operation as well as Rev Media Group before adjourning to a dialogue and discussion session with Media Prima's management.

Fahmi noted that the corporate visit had provided an insight into Media Prima's overall operations as well as challenges that were faced by the group within the industry.

Media Prima were represented by group chairman Datuk Seri (Dr) Syed Hussian Aljunid, group managing director (MD) Rafiq Razali, deputy group MD and Media Prima Omnia chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Michael Chan, Media Prima Television Networks and Primeworks Studios CEO Datuk Khairul Anwar Salleh, Media Prima Audio CEO Nazri Noran, REV Media group CEO Samuel Wee and Media Prima Omnia chief operating officer (sales direct) Mohd Efendi Omar.
