Saifuddin: M'sia to replace current border authorities with single agency

JOHOR BARU: Malaysia is set to have a single border agency to fully control the country's checkpoints, soon.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said his ministry was currently fine-tuning the establishment of a one-stop agency which has been studied since 2018.

He could not provide a timeline to when the agency would be formed but said it would be soon as they were in the final stage of discussions.

The ministry also had a dossier of committee findings on the subject.

"But there are 20 agencies involved in Border Concerns, even I cannot remember all their names," he said during a working visit to the causeway that started at 5am today.

He said the laws and policies would also be streamlined to suit the new collapsed agency's requirements.

"If we succeed in setting up a single border agency where all functions of these agencies are unified while the security element and usage of technology are not compromised, we believe we will be in the right direction and this would then need to be implanted," he added.

He said this when met after chairing the Johor Causeway congestion coordination committee meeting held at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar here on Friday.

He said the government was employing the methods and practises of countries that have single border agencies such as United Kingdom, United States of America, New Zealand, Canada and Singapore.
