Anwar's Singapore visit gets underway

SINGAPORE: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the republic got underway this morning as the aircraft carrying the prime minister and wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail touched down at Changi International Airport at about 9.40 am.

Anwar wasted little time and sprang to action on his first visit to Singapore since taking office last November, attending a pre-council meeting with government officials at the Malaysian High Commission.

Later, he will be feted at a welcome ceremony by the host nation before attending an orchid naming and making a courtesy call on Singapore President Halimah Yacob at the Istana.

Anwar's schedule will continue with a face-to-face meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the palace, to emphasise flourishing bilateral ties between the two Asean countries.

He is due to witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the International Trade and Industry Ministry and Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry ahead of the official lunch hosted by Lee.

Anwar will also witness the signing of a cross-border electricity purchase agreement between YTL PowerSeraya Pte Ltd and Tenaga Nasional Bhd at Shangri-La Hotel.

An engagement with Bloomberg and a hi-tea with the Malaysian diaspora here are also on the cards before Anwar wraps up his one-day visit with a press conference with the Malaysian media.
