PN reiterates call for targeted EPF withdrawals, moratoriums

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) today has reiterated its call for targeted withdrawals from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

Its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the move would help to alleviate the burden of the people.

"Listen to the voices of the people who want their welfare to be taken care of.

"There is nothing wrong with the government considering another round of EPF withdrawal. And let it be targeted withdrawal if that is what the people want in order to help alleviate their burden during these challenging times.

"It is not the government's money (the EPF), but their money," he said while taking part in the debate on the Royal Address in parliament today.

Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh MP, said the same should be with the moratorium.

"Banks continue to make a profit even when the country is facing the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Why not, once again these banks help the borrowers by giving targeted moratoriums for a certain period to help them with the inflation and overnight policy rate.

"The government need not fork out money, not even one cent."

He also has called on the government to stop playing politics and to walk the talk.

"Out of sudden, there is a policy that allows ministers to appoint their children as officers, even if they are not being paid.

"It causes conflict or interest, or nepotism.

"What the people want to see is for the ministers to work for them."

His speech was believed to be referring to the appointment of Nurul Izzah as the senior advisor on economics and finance to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

On Monday, Izzah, however, stepped down from the post.

The Advisory Committee to the Finance Ministry then invited Izzah to jointly head a secretariat to support the committee's operation.
