Govt has no plans for senior citizen pension scheme

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has no plans for a pension scheme for senior citizens who are not civil service retirees or do not get a pension from the Social Security Organisation.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said the ministry, through the Social Welfare Department, was offering social services to those aged 65 and above in the form of welfare and financial aid, such as contributions of RM500 per month under the Senior Citizen Assistance programme.

"Other forms of aid include the establishment of the Senior Citizen Activity Centre, as well as senior citizen care services in institutions like Rumah Seri Kenangan and Rumah Ihsan," said Nancy.

She said there were programmes promoting productive aging through the provision of space and opportunities for senior citizens to be involved in the economy sector, even though it was on a small scale.

She said this in response to a question from William Leong Jee Keen (PH-Selayang) during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today.
