TnG monopoly: Domestic Trade, Transport and Works ministries to meet to discuss open payment system alternative

BANGI: Three ministries will soon meet to discuss the best possible way to have an open payment system so as to give the public more choice in the matter instead of having to rely solely on Touch n Go (TnG).

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said his ministry as well as the Transport and Works ministries would meet as soon as possible.

He said the meeting had been suggested by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

"When I was in Parliament, I discussed things with the transport minister because he brought up the idea of having other systems besides TnG so it would be easier for the people to do things like pay for parking and on highways.

"From the discussion, we have decided that we should hold a meeting with the Works Ministry as well, through the Malaysian Highway Authority," he said after launching the Jualan Rahmah Syabab Dates programme.

On Monday, Loke had said his ministry had ordered all its agencies, including public transportion operators under it, to have an open payment system.

This comes after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the government would review the current monopoly held by TnG as there had been no improvement on its services.

Salahuddin said his ministry was aware of the public's concerns about TnG and had held four meetings with the company.

"We will discuss with MHA so that users can use other systems like credit and debit cards to pay (tolls) and not just TnG, as there is a big problem now as the public cannot get the (TnG) cards easily, only at a few service centres nationwide.

"We want to give the people alternatives... it's not that we want to terminate TnG's services. We just want to solve the complaints the people have about TnG," he said.
