Pas to raise funds to buy container homes for Turkiye earthquake victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Islamist party, Pas, is on a quest to raise funds for the people of Turkiye who were displaced by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early February.

Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said they are aiming to raise RM3 million to provide 100 container homes worth RM30,000 each for the victims.

He said there are 6,514 mosques in the country and hoped each would contribute at least one container home which comes with a bedroom, a kitchen, a living hall and toilet.

"That is (what we can get) from mosques alone. If churches and other parties can help contribute, we can easily achieve the aim.

"Malaysians are known to be generous and Ramadan is an apt time to contribute," he said at the breaking of fast and fund raising dinner for Pas Relief's Aid for Turkey and Syria tonight.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) members of Parliament have also been asked to seek funds to boost the contributions for the container homes, he added.

Tuan Ibrahim had in March led a delegation of PN MPs to Turkiye to deliver food and clothing to the quake victims.

He said he saw for himself the urgent need for the container homes as a majority of the evacuees were living uncomfortably in tents in the winter and they are forced to share bathrooms.

"In the long run, it would be more comfortable for them to have the container homes, on top of the abundant food aid provided to them as well as winter clothing.

"The site of these container homes will be determined by the Turkish government," he added.

In mid-February, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made a one-day visit to Turkiye to provide moral support following a call by Turkish president Recep Tayyip to go over.

Anwar had said the government successfully collected funds amounting to RM20 million to be used in humanitarian aid missions in Turkiye and Syria.

It included US$1 million contributed by the federal government and another US$1 million from Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

The government had also spent RM4 million to send two Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team to aid the search and rescue mission in Turkiye.
