Strong winds damage 30 houses in Sik

SIK: About 30 houses from two villages in Jeneri, near here, were damaged by strong winds after a storm swept through the district at 4.45pm today.

Ten of the affected village houses were deemed critically damaged.

Sik Civil Defence Force officer Haisul Aishah Mohd Napiah said the department received public distress calls regarding the incident at 5.02pm today.

She said that the strong winds uprooted numerous trees in the area, damaging 30 houses in Kampung Berona Kanan and Kampung Berona Kiri.

"Strong winds swept through Jeneri uprooted trees which fell onto several houses and also blocked roadways in the affected area.

"Ten houses affected were critically damaged while the other 20 houses sustained less severe damage," she said in a statement today.

She added that clearing operations to remove debris and uprooted trees at the affected location are in progress.

"No victims were required to be relocated to temporary relief centres," she added.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning that most districts in the state are expected to experience evening thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall.

Kedah MetMalaysia director Muhammad Khalil Abd Aziz said this is due to the onset of the Monsoon Transition Period which is expected to persist from late March until May.
