No leak of confidential information from hacked website - Immigration DG

PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department has assured Malaysians that no confidential information from the department's website was compromised following a 2am cyber attack on its website.

Director-General Datuk Ruslin Jusoh in a statement today confirmed that the Immigration Department's official website had been hacked by a group that called themselves 'CaptainSmok3r', However no data was compromised.

He said the hackers launched a cyber attack in the form of defacement which resulted in the change of the department's landing page.

"The hackers only managed to change the display image on the landing page, but could not access the other services provided within the website such myIMMs, SSPI and others.

"We have taken immediate remedial and preventive measures by shutting down public access to the website temporarily. The temporary shut down is to enable all remedial works to be carried out accordingly to the affected site and for us to conduct security configuration of the website," he said in a statement today.

Ruslin said the department's Information Technology Division had also been in discussion with National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and Cyber Security Malaysia to improve and strengthen security aspects of the website.

"We expect the recovery and security strengthening works to be completed and restored by this evening. The department's official site would be reopened and made accessible to public as usual," Ruslin said, stressing that no information had been leaked in the early morning cyber attack incident.

He urged the public to remain calm and not to make assumptions or speculations that may cause unnecessary confusion to the public.
