4 killed, including baby, in Kedah lorry-car crash

KULIM: Four in a family, including a baby, died, while two children were critically injured when their vehicle collided with a lorry on the Kulim-Baling trunk road near Bukit Selarong estate in Padang Meha today.

State Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Abdul Rahim Che Omar said a rescue team was dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 4.06pm.

"There were six victims in the crash, four of whom were confirmed dead by medical officers from the Health Ministry.

"The victims include the 32-year-old male car driver, two women, aged 30 and 59, and a two-month-old baby girl.

"Two other victims, children, aged two and 14 years old, sustained severe injuries," he said when contacted today.

Rahim said the victims were trapped in the mangled vehicle.

"Firemen extricated the victims. The injured were rushed to Kulim Hospital," he added.

Meanwhile, Kulim police chief Superintendent Redzuan Salleh said initial investigations showed that the accident occurred after the car veered off into the opposite lane before colliding with the lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

"The victims were travelling from Kulim to their home in Kuala Ketil, Baling, before their car collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction," he said.

Redzuan said the victims who died on the spot had been identified as the driver of the Perodua Bezza, his wife, their daughter and his mother-in-law.

"The bodies will be sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for post-mortem," he said.

Redzuan added that the two seriously injured children in the crash were the couple's two-year-old daughter and the wife's younger brother, aged 14.

The 57-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt, and police classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
