Loke: MRT Kajang Line designated ladies coach to be in operations soon

KLANG: The trial run for the designated ladies coach for the MRT Kajang Line will begin middle of this month, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the ladies coach will come to full force next month and can cater to 100 commuters at one time.

"I have asked Prasarana to make early preparations as we want passengers to be aware of the existence of the ladies coach.

"The MRT has a four-car set and one of it will be used for the ladies coach.

"This concept will be extended to other MRT lines, as well as LRT lines, after.

"The KTM Komuter has long introduced this concept but it will be new for MRT and LRT," he said today.

In early July, Loke said the move was to give a comfortable and secure environment for women when commuting.

He said he was aware of the backlash from male passengers who lamented that they were deprived as the MRT and LRT trains were already crowded and 'sardine packed.'

"But the biggest concern for women on transportation system is sexual harassment. It is on an upward trend based on complaints to Prasarana.

"Some men tend to put their hands at inappropriate places and this worries the women.

"This is a huge problem and although this concept was not pushed by any women's non-governmental organisation, I told Prasarana it needs to be resolved and a ladies coach was necessary," he added.

KTM Komuter introduced the ladies coach on April 28, 2010 in the interest of its women commuters, which makes up 60 per cent.

The ladies' coaches are differentiated with pink stickers displayed on the outer and inner parts of the coach bearing the words "Coach for Ladies Only" as well as special waiting areas.
