Media Prima, Mercy Malaysia launch campaigns for Morocco earthquake and Libya flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd and the Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) today launched two campaigns - Morocco earthquake and Libya flood relief - to assist the victims in both countries.

Media Prima Group Managing Director Rafiq Razali expressed his commitment to ensuring the success of these campaigns.

"We are deeply saddened by the calamity that has resulted in the loss of lives, livelihoods, and damage to properties, with millions being left homeless in both countries.

"We will leverage our reach and platforms to raise awareness and support for this cause. We plead with all our generous citizens to support this humanitarian mission. Every donation counts," he said in a statement today.

In the meantime, Mercy Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus highlighted that this partnership underscores the importance of collaboration between the private sector and civil society in addressing humanitarian crises.

On Sept 8, Morocco was struck by a devastating earthquake that had a lasting impact, affecting over 2,900 individuals, injuring at least 5,530 others, and leaving over 10,000 individuals feared to be missing.

On Sept 10, storm Daniel made landfall in Libya, unleashing severe weather conditions characterised by strong winds, sudden heavy rainfall, and widespread flooding that severely affected multiple northeastern regions of the country.

The flood in Libya resulted in the loss of more than 2,000 lives, displaced 30,000 individuals, and left another 5,000 missing. The powerful storm damaged dams, inundated northeast Libya, destroyed homes, caused substantial damage, disrupted the road network, and severed communication lines.
