MACC to focus on high-profile, large-scale corruption cases

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will focus more on high-profile cases that resulted in the loss of public funds.

In line with the graft-buster's 56th year of establishment, its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, said MACC must act swiftly in addressing corruption cases that had a significant impact on the country.

He added that among MACC's main strategies for addressing corruption were curbing the misappropriation of public funds and misconduct caused by irresponsible parties.

"Tomorrow marks MACC's 56th anniversary. Our main mission and vision as a graft-buster is to have effective strategies using new technologies to curb high-impact corruption activities.

"One of these strategies is to reduce the misappropriation of public funds, as well as focus on the loss of the nation's funds in significant cases," he said after a shooting event with the media in conjunction with MACC's 56th anniversary.

Azam emphasised the significant role of the media in disseminating information on corruption and abuse of power to the masses.

"About 90 per cent of anti-corruption reports covered by the media receive positive public feedback.

"This demonstrates the importance of the media to help MACC spread the anti-corruption culture in the country," he said, adding that he looked forward to forming closer ties between the commission and the media.
