Heavy rain causes flooding in Kampung Baru

KUALA LUMPUR: Prolonged heavy rain in the city had caused several houses in Kampung Baru to be inundated with flood waters, this evening.

According to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohamad Riduan Akhyar, the Kuala Lumpur Operations Centre (PGO KL) had sent out a team from the Titiwangsa fire station to conduct monitoring around the Kampung Periuk area at 5pm.

"The eight-man team had evacuated 19 people in Kampung Periuk following a flash flood.

"The victims were eight males, consisting of three elderly people, two adults and three children.

"Meanwhile, the female victims consisted of an elderly woman, six adults and four children."

He added that all the victims rescued were sent to a temporary flood evacuation centre at SMK Puteri, here.

According to reports, two locations around Kampung Baru, namely in Kampung Periuk, saw flood waters rising up to 0.4 metres while in Jalan Hamzah, saw the water rising up to half a metre.
