Shuhaily downplays viral fame

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director, Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain who recently shot to viral fame for a video of his strict stance issued to officers says he is merely doing his job.

"While some say I instantly shot to fame after a TikTok video, I don't think so, because the things I spoke about, fighting corruption and carrying out police duties accordingly are things that have been repeatedly said and reminded by my superiors, both Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Deputy IG Datuk Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay.

"What I said in the video, probably, is just to amplify the leaderships message to those in the force," he said, downplaying his recent 'stardom' on social media platforms following his speech in Penang, recently.

Shuhaily said changing laid-back working style and fighting corruption is not that easy.

"We have to have a sense of responsibility towards our job and when something is not right, as a family, this is what we do, try to make things better," he said, when asked to comment about the reactions received over the past two days.

Shuhaily added that he was overwhelmed by the encouragement and positive comments the video has so far received.

In the viral video which has been widely shared, he was reported saying, 'either you change, or you will be changed'.

"I am not asking for money, I just want you to work," he was quoted saying in an address to CID officers at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang.

He then went on to say that he has no use for officers who are interested only in their own personal gain.

"Their spirit isn't in dignifying the force, but filling their own throats and bellies.

"You would be willing to sell the life of your teammates all for the money that you get from syndicates. In other words, they will be those that will kill one another just for money," he was reported to have said.
