McDonald's Malaysia celebrates 12,000 orphans this month

KUALA LUMPUR: McDonald's Malaysia continues to strengthen its commitment to local communities by organising its Community Month in October.

Community Month is one of the initiatives under the McDonald's and Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Community Programme, which aims to create a positive impact in the community around McDonald's operating locations.

"Program Komuniti McDonald's & RMHC" encompasses all community activities carried out throughout the year by McDonald's Malaysia, including the implementation of this Community Month.

"Community Month will focus mainly on underprivileged children. McDonald's Malaysia takes an approach through birthday celebrations to cheer up and create sweet memories for orphans.

"This is how we contribute back to the community, which has always supported us all this time," said McDonald's Malaysia managing director and local operations partner Datuk Azmir Jaafar.

Community Month was first implemented in 2017 and it is filled with various activities for underprivileged children.

Post pandemic, in 2021, McDonald's Malaysia chose the approach of organising birthday celebrations to ensure the implementation of more focused and high-impact activities for orphans.

"Celebrating a birthday is a very meaningful event for a person. Every time a birthday celebration is held, we can see the happy smiles of the orphans involved. This is what motivates us to continue this initiative. Furthermore, organising a lively birthday celebration is our specialty at McDonald's," said Azmir.

Throughout October, McDonald's Malaysia will organise birthday celebrations involving more than 12,000 orphans from 400 welfare homes selected throughout the country.

McDonald's Malaysia has allocated RM300,000 for this purpose.

Last Wednesday, McDonald's Malaysia organised a birthday celebration at Yayasan An-Nur Maisarah in Chemor, Perak, as the curtain-raiser for the month of activities.

The celebrations will continue until the end of the month, either at a children's welfare home or at a McDonald's restaurant.

RMHC Malaysia also supports the implementation of this year's Community Month by giving back-to-school packs to orphans. A total of 90 Back to School Packs were presented to orphans at the An-Nur Maisarah Foundation, on Wednesday.

"I am very happy that McDonald's Malaysia chose Yayasan An-Nur Maisarah to make their Community Month a success this year. This is the first time we have partnered with McDonald's Malaysia and celebrated a large-scale birthday party like this.

"The children really enjoyed the festivities with several large cakes, colorful decorations and coupled with very interesting game activities. The Back to School Pack donation will certainly make them more enthusiastic to go to school with new school equipment. The happy and excited faces of these children are clearly visible and I am thankful to McDonald's Malaysia," said An-Nur Maisarah Foundation director and chairman of the board of trustees Dr Fazillah Nordin.

Community Month is one of the most important and largest community initiatives implemented by McDonald's Malaysia.

As the highlight and end to this year's McDonald's Community Month, for the first time, McDonald's Malaysia will also organise the Mekdi Family Carnival which is an open event for the public.

Selected children's welfare homes have been invited to enliven this carnival in several locations, namely McDonald's Putrajaya from Oct 28-29; Penang Auto City from Nov 4-5 and Mutiara Rini, Johor Baru from Nov 10-11.
