[Updated] TikTok denies restricting Malaysian posts on Palestinian cause, Anwar says will continue to monitor

DENGKIL: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Malaysia will continue to monitor reports that social media platform TikTok had allegedly restricted and removed posts that support Palestinian causes.

This came after TikTok had told international news agency Reuters that it had denied the accusations of removing Malaysian posts leaning towards Palestine over the escalating conflict between the nation and Israel.

"They (TikTok) denied, but we will continue to monitor," he told reporters after attending today's weekly Friday prayers.

Yesterday, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that there is evidence that TikTok had removed content related to the Palestine-Israel conflict originating from Malaysian users.

Fahmi stated that this was substantiated by numerous platform users who reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that their content and live broadcasts were either removed or restricted.

This included content related to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's speech during last Tuesday's Malaysia Stands with Palestine Rally.

To an MP's suggestion that the government should abstain from participating in the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders' Week next month, Anwar said: "We will assess the circumstances before making a decision."

Local news portal Malaysiakini reported yesterday that Machang MP from Bersatu, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, had called Putrajaya to skip the event to express Malaysia's objection to the US government's position on the Gaza conflict.
