Economic challenges impacting Labuan and the region in spotlight at one-day conference

LABUAN: Critical economic topics affecting Labuan and the region took centre stage at the International Finance and Labuan: Regional Cooperation and Challenges 2023 seminar here today (October 31).

The one-day event, which was held at the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International and organised by the university's Faculty of International Finance, featured five speakers who shared insights on various facets of international finance and economics, especially on issues affecting Labuan.

The seminar kicked off with a welcoming speech by the university's Faculty of International Finance dean, associate professor Dr Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal, followed by a presentation by Professor Dr Kabir Hassan from the University of New Orleans' department of economics and finance.

Geoffrey said the seminar served as a platform for experts and industry leaders to exchange knowledge, explore innovative solutions, and address the economic challenges facing Labuan.

"The event highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of international finance and economics.

"The seminar undoubtedly played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among experts and stakeholders, setting the stage for a more prosperous economic future in Labuan and the broader region," he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, Kabir delved into the Asian Monetary Fund and its potential impact on Labuan, shedding light on the region's economic future.

Neurogine Group chief executive officer Owen Chen Chee Onn presented a thought-provoking paper that revolved around the transformation of Labuan into a financial blockchain centre of excellence and how it can contribute to addressing food security challenges in the region.

The spotlight then shifted to Dr Emily Yap Hon Shin, a senior UMS lecturer, who discussed the significance of adopting cutting-edge financial technology in the agricultural sector.

Labuan Chamber of Commerce chairman, Daniel Doughty, discussed the current state of Labuan and its future requirements.

His presentation provided valuable insights into the economic landscape of Labuan and the necessary steps for its sustainable growth.

The Association of Labuan Trust Companies chairman, Datuk Chin Chee Kee, rounded off the event with a discussion on the prospects and challenges for trust companies in Labuan.

His presentation offered a comprehensive view of the trust industry and its role in the region's economic development. – Bernama
