Fahmi: Government considering TikTok Shop restriction

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is currently scrutinising the proposal to restrict TikTok Shop, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

"This matter is still under review, and a series of engagements have been and will be conducted with stakeholders regarding the operation of TikTok Shop in Malaysia.

"At the moment, no decision has been made by the government regarding the restriction of TikTok Shop," he said during the winding-up session in Dewan Rakyat today.

TikTok Shop is a feature on the social media application which allows sellers and brands to sell products directly via short videos, live videos and the product showcase page.

On Oct 4, Indonesia become the first country in the world to ban the feature on TikTok due to it being contravening the republic's law on e-commerce, among other things.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said from January to Sept 30 this year, the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with TikTok, has taken down 2,783 contents on the platform that violated guidelines due to violations under existing law.

"Actions have been taken against individuals or users found uploading content that violates the law on the platform to control and curb the spread of unlawful content.

"These actions are based on existing legal provisions and made based on public complaints and affected parties," he said.
