No record of vehicle owners jailed for tinted windows, says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no record of vehicle owners, in relation to the use of tinted windows, being brought to court or being jailed.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this matter was confirmed with the Road Transport Department (RTD)

He also dismissed claims that vehicle owners who violate the regulations on tinted windows will be jailed, as portrayed in social media. Loke said those who violated the regulations on tinted windows would first receive a compound.

"From a legal perspective, if anyone fails to follow and comply with road regulations, they would be given a compound but choose not to pay, they can be brought to court.

"That's the general procedure, not only on the use of tinted windows.

"I hope this explains to the public that the government has no intention of imprisoning vehicle owners if they misuse tinted windows," he said during a winding-up session in Dewan Rakyat today.

On Oct 6, the department reminded owners of private vehicles to comply with the regulations on the use of tinted windows set out in the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991 (Amendment 2019).

The regulation on the use of tinted windows based on the percentage of permissible visible light transmission (VLT) is 70 per cent for the front windscreen and 50 per cent for front side windows, while the rear windscreen and rear side windows can be fully tinted.

According to RTD, vehicle owners who fail to comply with the window tinting regulations can be fined not more than RM2,000 or imprisoned for a period not exceeding six months.
