Employers reminded to strictly adhere to safety regulations

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) has reminded employers to strictly adhere to safety regulations to ensure a safe work environment following the death of three Bangladeshi workers who were buried alive at a construction site in Machang, Kelantan.

Yesterday, three Bangladeshi workers were killed when they were buried alive in a mishap at a construction site for a highway in Kampung Maka in Labok, near Pulai Chondong.

It was reported that six workers were climbing up the hole they were digging earlier when the soil suddenly gave way at about noon, trapping three of them.

Niosh, in a statement, said the unfortunate incident highlights the pressing need for employers to strictly adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 which is aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of employees at all workplaces.

"Under the amended Act, the duties of employers have now been extended to include contractors, subcontractors and the employees they engage.

"Niosh also encourages employers and their workers to practise the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) method which could help identify potential hazards, assess the risks associated with them and implement effective control measures.

"By implementing HIRARC, employers can also proactively mitigate risks and enhance workplace safety," it said.

Niosh also stressed the importance of occupational safety and health (OSH) training for workers which equips workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and respond to potential hazards in the workplace.

"Niosh strongly encourages employers to invest in comprehensive training programmes that empower their workforce to take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their colleagues."

Niosh also highlighted the pivotal role of the Site Safety Supervisor in overseeing and maintaining a safe work environment.

"They are responsible for monitoring safety protocols, conducting safety inspections and ensuring that all workers are well-informed about potential risks.

"It is essential for employers to designate responsible and competent individuals as Site Safety Supervisors to prevent tragic accidents such as the one that occurred in Machang.

"Niosh stands ready to provide guidance, resources, and assistance to employers and workers to ensure compliance with OSH regulations.

"We believe that every worker has the right to a safe and healthy workplace, and it is our collective responsibility to make this a reality," it said.
