Speaker: Parliamentary committee to decide over 'zionist' remark against Kota Melaka MP

KUALA LUMPUR: The motion submitted by Kota Melaka member of parliament (MP) Khoo Poay Tiong to refer two opposition MPs to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee over the statement linking him to Israel will be decided in a few days' time.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said he would make the decisions pertaining to the matter in two to three days.

"I have received all the motions and answers. God willing, I will make a decision in the next two to three days, trust me," he said.

Johari's response came after Khoo had enquired the Speaker about the decision on the motion submitted to refer Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) and Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) for linking him to Israel.

"On Oct 18, he (Awang) accused me of being a zionist, where he said that 'not holistically, but there are elements that he is a zionist'. 'He' here refers to me.

"Meanwhile, Arau accused me of being a Jew and he did not retract (the statement). Hence, I have referred him to the committee and I want to know about the decision," he said in Dewan Rakyat, today.

Following this, Shahidan then interfered saying that he was only making a general statement.

The Arau MP also stated that the statement was not directed to anyone, specifically Khoo.

On Oct 18, a ruckus erupted in the Dewan Rakyat when Khoo interrupted former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's (PN-Pagoh) debate session and made some remarks about the latter's son-in-law's whereabouts.

Khoo's remarks, however, led to a shouting match between government backbenchers and opposition MPs, including Awang who told Khoo to stop acting like a 'zionist'.
