KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) issued a warning today saying that the northeast monsoon is expecting four to six episodes of heavy rainfall on Nov 11 until March next year.
In a statement, it said heavy rainfall episodes are expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor and western Sarawak from Nov 2023 to Jan next year.
However, METMalaysia said if the monsoon winds are strong and coincide with the presence of a low-pressure weather system, continuous heavy rain can occur in other states of Malaysia.
"Continuous heavy rainfall for several days can lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
"If continuous heavy rain occurs simultaneously with high tide events and storm surges,
the risk of flooding can become more extreme.
"Furthermore, sustained and strong northeast winds can cause rough seas, a risk of rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea," said Met Malaysia
It also said from Feb to Mar 2024, it is expected that the northern regions of the Peninsula (Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu), Sabah, Labuan, and northern Sarawak will experience reduced rainfall.
"The anticipated hot and dry weather starting from March 2024 may potentially lead to heatwaves.
"This situation is due to the expected continuation of El Nino until mid-2024 and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) until the first quarter of 2024."
