Perak state govt, telcos working on wider broadband coverage for Visit Perak Year

KAMPAR: The state government will work with several telecommunications companies to enhance and widen broadband coverage in recreational forest areas that are among the tourist attractions during the Visit Perak Year 2024.

State Communications, Multimedia and NGO Committee Chairman, Mohd Azlan Helmi, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been requested to review and identify suitable devices for these locations.

"Discussions are ongoing and the broadband services offered by the companies are more towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects.

"The installation of telecommunication towers is prohibited in recreational forests, so there must be other suitable mechanisms to enhance broadband services in those areas," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the Perak Digital Carnival 2023 at Terminal Putra Sentral Kampar, here today (November 7).

Mohd Azlan said this is a pilot project, expected to be completed by next month and, if successful, it will be expanded to other areas.

He said the initiative would not only provide better broadband services to tourists but also to the Orang Asli communities who mostly live in recreational forest areas.

In addition, the committee is also working with the tourism exco to gather the latest data on other tourist attraction sites in Perak that are facing poor broadband coverage, he said, adding that completion dates for enhancing coverage in those locations would be announced later. – Bernama
