Avoid outdoor activities at hills, rivers during Northeast Monsoon Season, authorities warn

ALOR STAR: People in Kedah have been advised to refrain from engaging in outdoor activities at hill and riverside parks throughout the Northeast Monsoon Season to avoid water surge incidents.

State Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Mohd Muaz Mohd Yusof said although the agency has identified 39 water surge hotspots, other locations may also pose serious risks.

He warned that water surge incidents could occur in any hill or riverside locations such as the one that hit Sintok and narrowly missed the main campus of Universiti Utara Malaysia two days ago.

"We are not prohibiting civilians to enjoy outdoor activities in hill and riverside parks especially during the Deepavali festive period but please practice caution when doing so.

"The water surge incident in Sintok was an unexpected event and there can be more hill and riverside areas that could be prone to the water surge phenomenon.

"We advise all civilians to avoid such activities until the rainy season ends," he told reporters after conducting monitoring operations at Sungai Kedah here today.

Muaz said according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the Northeast Monsoon Season will begin from November 9 until March next year.

He stressed that park visitors must observe appropriate safety measures when visiting recreational areas, especially during the period.

"Ensure that you and your family are in good health, be aware of the weather conditions at your chosen location, and ensure that your camping site is established on safe and elevated ground.

"Be vigilant about your surroundings and monitor the activities of your family members, especially children when swimming. If there are any changes in water and weather conditions, it is advisable to leave the area," he added.

He said signs of a water surge phenomenon include rapid flowing foamy or murky water accompanied by tree branches and dry leaves.

"Keep an eye for dark clouds at the hilltops. These may indicate a sudden downpour of a large volume of rain," he added.

On Tuesday, a water surge phenomenon occurred at Bukit Kachi near the main campus of UUM in Sintok following several hours of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The phenomenon caused flooding to a hillside campsite, four houses, a surau and a park inside UUM.

Kubang Pasu Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Mohd Adenin Suhaimi reportedly said no civilians were harmed and no temporary flood evacuation centres (PPS) were activated following the incident.
