Say no to proxy govt, give those in Gaza the power to choose their leaders, says GSPP

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must say no to any attempts by Israel and the United States (US) to place their proxy as the government in Gaza to replace Hamas after any ceasefire, says Gabungan Solidariti Pembebasan Palestin (GSPP).

GSPP chairman Muhammad Fauzi Asmuni said Hamas had always been the legitimate representative of the people of Gaza after winning the elections in 2016.

"Malaysia needs to object to any proxy from the United Nations (UN) in any country, including Palestine. That's what the West did before. After the First World War, before the Jews entered Palestine, they put in place the British mandate.

"The same format will happen when the UN mandates a neutral body in one country. The things that happened in Palestine are a matter of history. The British hold the trust, so to speak, but in that way, they have brought in the Jews," he said in a media conference here today.

He was asked to comment on the statements of US and Israeli leaders who want to place the Palestinian Authority under the leadership of the Fatah party as the new leadership in Gaza to replace Hamas.

Muhammad Fauzi said, if the country in question wants to replace Hamas, then the election of a new government in Gaza must be done in a democratic manner that involves elections.

"So if a mandate is given to Fatah by the United Nations, in my opinion, that is invalid. The mandate must come from the people.

"If you want to free Gaza from the rule and influence of Hamas, return the power to the people to vote. So the people's choice becomes the final and valid decision," he said.
