Malaysia will continue to work with Thailand to curb cross border activities

TUMPAT: Malaysia will continue its co-operation with its Thai counterpart to curb cross border activities.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said both countries have been assisting each other in preventing various types of cross border activities, ranging from drugs to firearms smuggling.

"Malaysia need to have good relationship with its neighbours to curb these illegal activities.

"Smuggling of drugs, firearms, illegal immigrants, contraband and even cattle are a threat to the country.

"We have suffered losses in term of subsidy due to these activities. There are borders in our country where kidnapping for ransom happens.

"Therefore, security at the country's borders need to be tightened and for that, the government's border agencies must co-operate with those from the neighbouring country," he said.

Saifuddin spoke at Press conference after launching the General Operations Force (GOF) new front-base post in Nibong here today.

Present were ministry secretary-general, Datuk Ruji Ubi, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and GOF Southeast Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Sheik Azhar Sheik Omar.

Saifuddin said the Home Ministry would also play its role by increasing its land and sea assets.

"The ministry needs to focus on this aspect and the police as the main agency, must adapt to new threats by new crimes," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Saifuddin said he had directed the ministry secretary-general to solve the problem faced by the GOF members in the Nibong post.

"I was informed that they are facing problem to get clean water supply. I have asked the secretary-general to rent lorries to transport clean water to the post.

"I believe this is important and needs to be addressed fast as GOF members at this post need to have such facilities while on duty at the Kelantan/Thai border," he added.
