Resolution 2712 will facilitate protection of civilians in Gaza strip

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has endorsed the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) approval of Resolution 2712 (2023) addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The resolution, ratified on Nov 15, is now recognised as a pivotal advancement in the ongoing efforts to address and resolve the crisis in the region.

Wisma Putra in a statement said Malaysia consistently calls for the UNSC to fulfill its primary responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.

Malaysia sees the adoption of Resolution 2712 (2023) as a crucial milestone in responding to the pressing issues in that region, it said.

"Malaysia believes that Resolution 2712 (2023) provides a temporary measure to urgently facilitate access to humanitarian aid for those in need, along with the protection of innocent civilians, particularly children, throughout the Gaza Strip.

"The government underscores the resolution's importance as an initial step that concrete actions to cease hostilities immediately should follow.

"It is vital to preventing further loss of lives and destruction of property. We urge all parties involved to adhere to the resolution, per Article 25 of the UN Charter," the statement read.

Expressing strong condemnation, Malaysia denounced the ongoing attacks on the civilian population in Gaza, including the bombing of hospitals and civilian facilities.

"Such actions are deemed clear violations of international law, encompassing international human rights and humanitarian law.

"Malaysia also rejects the pretext of self-defence by Israel, the Occupying Power in the Palestinian Territory, to perpetrate genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against innocent Palestinians.

"Israel's aggression is neither proportionate nor lawful and runs contrary to the principles of the UN Charter," it added.

As the international community closely monitors the situation, Malaysia calls for swift and tangible actions to address the root cause of the Palestinian issue, emphasising the need for a peaceful resolution, it said.

"Malaysia remains firm that the Palestinians deserve their own independent and sovereign state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its Capital."
