PM: Govt to make 'aggressive shifts' next year to elevate Malaysia's status

SHAH ALAM: The government will adopt a more assertive and firm approach to drive the essential changes that will enhance Malaysia's standing as a prominent nation in the region.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he was confident that the government was capable of this, but acknowledged that it would be an uphill climb.

"Next year, we will be more aggressive and firm in bringing about the necessary shifts not just to save the country, but to elevate Malaysia's dignity as a prominent nation in the region.

"I believe (that we can do this), but I understand that change is not easy.

"We started this government, although not favoured by many, with good governance, good attitude and values.

"This country can no longer be known as a country that is comfortable and tolerant with corruption and misappropriation."

He said this in his opening speech at the Tangan Emas Perdana Menteri and the Anugerah Tokoh Mahir Awards Ceremony 2023 here, today.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said all funds must be used wisely at all levels, reiterating that the Prime Minister did not hold the posts to enrich his family members.

"Ministers are there not for personal gain or gratification.

"This is our path. Change cannot happen if we (don't inculcate) positive values," he added.

He also said the people cannot continue arguing about race, religion, and differences in opinions, and said Malaysia cannot progress if this continued.

"If we want to raise our country's dignity, the economy must be managed well, and our younger generation must be trained.

"Stable politics can bring in more investments for our country. I hope all of you understand that this country needs to progress and it cannot do so with harmful and detrimental politics."

Also present were Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar, Deputy Works Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad, and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.
