Vernacular school: Education Ministry welcomes Appeals Court decision [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry welcomes the Appeals Court decision to uphold the constitutionality of vernacular schools and the use of Chinese and Tamil languages as its medium of instruction.

Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying said the decision will allow these institutions to go about their functions for teaching and learning legally.

"The SJK schools will continue to operate using Mandarin and Tamil as the medium of instruction for studies, teaching and learning legally and be protected by the Federal Constitution," she said during the question and answer session at Dewan Rakyat today.

Earlier today, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal by four organisations that sought a court declaration that the existence of vernacular schools and the use of Chinese and Tamil languages as medium of instruction were against the Federal Constitution.

A three-member bench chaired by Datuk Supang Lian made a unanimous decision today.

On Dec 29, 2021, the then High Court judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali dismissed the lawsuit brought by three parties - Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS), the Islamic Education Development Council (Mappim), and the Confederation of Malaysian Writers Association (Gapena).

The appellants, who filed the suit in December 2019, are seeking a declaration that the existence of vernacular schools goes against the Federal Constitution.
