Cuepacs lambasts plan to establish committee to monitor civil servants

KUALA LUMPUR: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) strongly criticised the proposal to establish a committee for monitoring civil servants, expressing dissent towards the government.

Cuepacs' president, Datuk Adnan Mat, deemed it a wasteful allocation of resources, emphasising that civil servants, as the backbone of the administration, maintain professionalism in their duties.

"While acknowledging that every civil servant has their own ideology and political views, Cuepacs assures that they are highly professional and always impartial in fulfilling their responsibilities, distinguishing public interests they bear.

"As public servants, they have pledged allegiance throughout their service to the existing government," he said in a statement today.

He insists that, in a democracy, civil servants possess the right to personal opinions, including during elections.

Adnan suggests that committees should be reserved for essential matters, such as improving living standards, cautioning against involving civil servants in political agendas for personal gain.

"The suggested move only harms the country, as there are more pressing matters for the government to attend to rather than monitoring the political tendencies of civil servants.

"Moreover, the establishment of such a committee uses existing government and civil service resources," he added.

The call for monitoring arose when a Johor PKR delegate expressed concern about teachers not supporting the government, urging the education ministry to create a committee to understand and address their opposition.
