Unicef: Palestinians desperate for fundamental necessities

KUALA LUMPUR: The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) Unicef James Elder said that Palestinians were growing increasingly desperate for fundamental necessities.

According to Al Jazeera, Unicef delivered five trucks loaded with high-energy biscuits, vitamin tablets for children, and medical kits yesterday through the Rafah crossing in adherence to the ceasefire agreement.

"You can see in the adults' eyes, they haven't eaten for a while. You can see the children are getting thinner, and they haven't eaten for a while. And yet, we're able to get to the hospitals, we're able to do the delivery.

"And then, there's just this immense relief. Literally, some people, as they get water, start drinking the water immediately. They're not waiting to take it home.

"They, of course, will take some home, but it's just drinking water, they are thirsty. They've been thirsty for days," said the spokesperson in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Elder expressed that this had been Unicef's significant concern, as they feared the situation might escalate into waterborne diseases.

He then further elaborated saying Unicef had dispatched numerous trucks carrying medical supplies to the area.

They engaged with doctors to understand their requirements, noting the visible relief and gratitude expressed by the medical staff.

The supplies included emergency kits, kits for midwives, IV solutions, saline solutions, and multivitamins specifically for children.

"Three things people keep asking for. Well, food and water, one. Medicines, and for the war to end.

"I had a person say to me. Are you here to end the war?...And what to say? No, your life is being decided elsewhere. We're here to stop bleeding," expressed James.
