Perak exco: Abandoned siblings placed in shelter until they turn 18

BAGAN SERAI: The court has ordered four siblings found abandoned in front of a guardhouse at the Perak Tengah District Administration Complex in Seri Iskandar, to be placed in a shelter until they turn 18.

State Women, Family, Social Welfare, Cooperatives and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Datuk Salbiah Mohamed said anyone wishing to adopt the children must go through the procedure set by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

"The procedures must be followed, and JKM will not place the children with families who may ruin their lives," she told reporters after opening the Perak State Entrepreneurs and Cooperatives Tour Programme at the Dato Zainal Abidin Zin Hall here, today (November 30).

The two brothers aged 11, 3 and a 10-month-old infant, along with their six-year-old sister, were left in front of the complex on November 23.

Yesterday (November 29), Perak Tengah district police chief, Superintendent Hafezul Helmi Hamzah, said two individuals believed to be the parents were arrested separately following a report about the incident lodged by the Kampung Gajah JKM staff member.

In another development, Salbiah said the Perak government has asked district authorities to look into additional assistance that can be provided to a family of three with learning disability living in a dilapidated house in Changkat Jering, Taiping, whose plight went viral on social media.

"I think what this family needs most is a comfortable home to live in. Perhaps this matter can be looked into, including other assistance that is deemed appropriate," she said, adding that JKM provides a monthly financial aid of RM450 for this family, which includes general and special education support. — Bernama
