Job seekers told to utilise govt employment portals to safeguard against scams

KUANTAN: Malaysians are reminded to only use services provided by authorised recruitment websites to avoid falling prey to job fraud syndicates that promise "attractive salaries".

Human Resources Ministry deputy secretary-general (Policy and International) Datuk Amran Ahmad said job seekers across the country needed to be extra cautious and conduct background checks when looking for jobs.

"Advise your family members and friends about the danger posed by the job scams and remind them to surf job portals provided by the government including national job service portal, MyFutureJobs, which is handled by the Human Resources ministry.

"Upon receiving a job offer, verify if the company is legitimate, read the employment contract, do not eagerly provide any personal or sensitive information, be careful with requests for

unreasonable advance payments and immediately refer to the authorities if there are further doubts.

"Conduct an in-depth examination to ensure the job offer is not dubious and has no elements of fraud. I believe that if all of us are vigilant then the potential to become job scam victims can be reduced," he said in his speech when opening the Pahang-level Customer Meeting Day programme here today.

Amran read the speech text which was supposedly delivered by former Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar, who has been dropped in the cabinet reshuffle earlier today.

Also present today was Pahang Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Sim Chon Siang who had earlier shared his experience facilitating the return of the job scam victims who were stranded abroad.

Meanwhile, Amran said the ministry's Customer Meeting Day programmes across the country provided the platform for job seekers to obtain information on suitable jobs.

"The programme allows the ministry and agency staff to look into the people's problems. The public will know the agencies placed under the ministry better and obtain immediate solutions to various issues which they are facing.

"Job seekers can attend interviews organised by various employers and the public can register to participate in training programmes offered by the agencies placed under the ministry," he said.
