Congestion expected as CIQ counters close in phases for upgrading

JOHOR BARU: Several counters at the Custom, Immigrations and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar will be closed in phases for upgrading works, beginning tomorrow.

A Johor Immigration Department notice stated several manual counters and e-gates immigration checkpoints will undergo phased closures until Jan 15, next year.

The closure will occur in three phases, with Phase 1 starting tomorrow,

E-gate counters one to three will be closed, as well as manual counters one to four.

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) passport verification counter will be closed in Phase 2, starting Dec 21.

The effected counters will be E-gate counters one to six, and manual counters 11 to 18.

While in Phase 3 (Dec 28), manual counters three to 12, will be closed.

Upgrading works at the CIQ's arrival hall will also be carried out in three phases namely on Dec 28 and Jan 3 and 9, next year.

Commuters are urged to plan their trips while taking into consideration the phased closures.

The closures which coincide with the school holidays are expected to exacerbate the existing congestion.

According to the immigration department's Jan 5, 2022 statistics, about 200,000 people travel daily through the CIQ.
